MAH: The Fabrics of Ancient Civilizations
Share
The story of apparel materials begins with the natural world, where early humans used whatever they could find in their environment to create garments that offered protection and comfort.
Early Materials: Animal Skins, Fur, and Plant Fibers
In the very beginning, humans used animal skins and fur to cover themselves. These materials were readily available through hunting, and their natural warmth made them ideal for survival in harsh climates. The hide of animals such as deer, bison, and seals were transformed into leather garments, which were crafted by the early humans using simple tools.
Plant fibers also played a significant role in early clothing. Early civilizations used materials like flax (which could be spun into linen), hemp, and bamboo to create basic fabrics. In ancient Egypt, papyrus was even woven into clothing, although this was more commonly used for writing than for fabric production.
