FTAG: The Style of the 60s
Share
The 1960s was an era of cultural revolution, youth rebellion, and a complete break from tradition. Fashion became an important form of self-expression, influenced by political movements, music, and the counterculture. It was a decade that defined the relationship between fashion and freedom.
For Women: Mod Fashion and the Rise of the Mini Skirt
The 1960s saw the rise of the Mod movement, with women embracing bold, geometric prints, mini skirts, and shifting silhouettes. Designers like Mary Quant made the mini skirt a global phenomenon, offering young women the freedom to express themselves with shorter hemlines and vibrant colors.
The iconic shift dress, often with bold patterns or bright, block colors, became synonymous with 60s style. Women also wore go-go boots, and knee-high stockings, and accessories like oversized sunglasses became a must-have.
For Men: The Mod Look and Bold Patterns
Men’s fashion in the 1960s was heavily influenced by the Mod movement, which promoted a sharp, tailored look. Skinny suits with narrow lapels, turtle necks, and bold patterns like stripes and checks became popular. The Beatles and other British bands made the beatnik look iconic, with tailored suits and Chelsea boots becoming staples.
At the same time, the rise of the hippie movement saw the emergence of flowing shirts, bell-bottom jeans, and tie-dye patterns, marking the beginning of more relaxed, bohemian styles.
